The cultural sector must also act economically. Among other things, those involved must carry out targeted promotional work, market their own offerings attractively and achieve good visitor numbers. With our Master's degree in Cultural Management, we teach students how to reconcile the economic and artistic perspectives of the profession and meet the demands of all stakeholders in the best possible way.
- Prof. Dr. Nicole Schwarz, Studienleiterin
People and culture - two things that are inextricably linked. Institutions such as theaters, museums and concert halls have a special role to play here. They are mediators and preservers of cultural heritage and at the same time promoters of a cultural future. For the responsible cultural managers, this means a wide range of tasks in a complex and multi-layered profession. The cultural manager gives art a space to develop by not simply transferring management doctrines to cultural enterprises, but by acting as an interface between art and business administration with sound knowledge from a wide range of fields.
As important as the cultural side is, the business aspects are just as important. In order to be able to take all facets into account here, cultural managers must have a sound knowledge of the respective artistic fields as well as being able to deal with artists. This also includes assessing the content of art, estimating its market value, building bridges between different stakeholders and attracting financiers. In addition, an understanding of socio-political and cultural-political, cultural-sociological and cultural-anthropological issues and trends helps. To put it bluntly, cultural managers walk between the ivory tower and the trading floor, where a high degree of social competence and communication skills are required to reconcile the different interests.
In our Master's degree course in Cultural Management, which was awarded the Saarland State Prize for University Teaching, we sharpen understanding for both sides - for art and business management methods. In this way, we address business economists who want to establish themselves professionally in the large field of art, as well as artists who want to sharpen their understanding of the use of resources, taking into account legal and economic framework conditions.
Thanks to the courses we offer, our students want to take the next step to become graduates with the skills required for a modern manager. Our Master's degree program is unique in that it combines three universities from different disciplines. Thanks to the close cooperation with the Saar University of Fine Arts, the Saar University of Music and the Saarland University of Applied Sciences, we are able to provide students with interdisciplinary and practical skills from both the business and artistic fields. In numerous projects and seminars in teamwork, they acquire the methodological, didactic and social tools that qualify them for leading positions in institutions and organizations in the cultural sector.
The Master's degree program in Cultural Management deals with the following questions:
We do a lot of projects and group work here, which allows us to see early on which mechanisms work in terms of organization or booking. We also cooperate a lot with the other art colleges in the city and can decide for ourselves whether we want to specialize in music, theater or art.
Kerstin Hein, Studentin
Culture is everywhere. The employment opportunities for graduates of our Master's degree in Cultural Management are correspondingly diverse. After graduating, they can be responsible for various management positions such as the management of an institution or its marketing. They work in public cultural institutions such as theaters, orchestras, museums or socio-cultural centers or can work in state authorities such as cultural offices or in private non-profit cultural institutions such as foundations or associations. They are also in demand in commercial companies in the cultural industry - such as in the art or book market, film or music industry, in festival management or in leisure parks.
Thanks to the close cooperation with the Saarbrücken partner universities, Saarland University of Music and Saarland University of Fine Arts, I was able to fall back on absolutely competent professors in the various cultural fields.
