The Master's degree course in Security Management is a good supplement to many Bachelor's degree courses, such as Industrial Engineering. Technical and legal aspects are taught. However, the management of crises and security situations will also become more important in the future. The course can be taken part-time with us.

Whether in government, business or society - security issues are becoming increasingly important and diverse: IT security, personal and property protection, security at events or fire protection are just some of the many facets of the security industry. The Master's degree course in Security Management at htw saar is therefore designed to be interdisciplinary, practical and user-oriented. Students gain an in-depth understanding of the emergence of risks and the provision of security in a modern society in this career-integrated postgraduate and continuing education course. They also learn about the legal framework, risk assessments and controlling and financing instruments. This enables them to create and implement security concepts and analyses in companies, authorities and institutions and to manage teams and tasks relating to safety and security.

Our part-time Master's degree in Security Management is aimed at specialists in the fields of occupational and operational safety, data protection and environmental officers, heads of plant security, police officers and members of the German armed forces. The Master's course consists of monthly attendance days and elements of distance learning. Students work through the course content themselves using digital teaching materials, receive specialist support via an online learning platform and take part in in-depth compact lectures, tutorials and laboratory experiments at htw saar.

Core questions of the course

The Security Management degree program deals with the following questions:

What means and methods can be used to further improve the interlocking of safety, security and management?
What influence does digitalization have on the security industry and how can it benefit from this?
How does the security industry deal with the issues of environmental protection and ecology?
What dangers lurk on the internet and how can we better protect ourselves against cybercrime attacks?

The pre-study program was really tough, it was an exhausting and intensive six months. Being able to use the teaching materials in the online classroom to prepare for and follow up on the seminars was a great help in learning effectively during these six months. I am now looking forward to exchanging experiences with other colleagues from other areas of the security industry.

Job prospects and career

A Master's degree at htw saar is definitely the next step on the career ladder in the security industry. Graduates can work in the higher civil service or in the private sector as specialists or managers, for example as security consultants, persons responsible for internal operational and organizational security and experts in all disciplines. A doctorate is also conceivable. Some graduates also take the plunge into self-employment and set up their own company.

I found out about the part-time Master's course in Security Management by chance and applied immediately. The four-semester course was particularly strenuous for me due to the shift work, especially in the last semester when I was writing my Master's thesis. At that time, I regularly commuted back and forth between the library and patrol duty, but in the end it was more than worth the effort.
